Summer School in Atma Jogya

Overview

Advance your career, deepen your knowledge, or explore new passions with ATMA JOGJA INTERNATIONAL SUMMER SCHOOL FOR ADULTS at Atma Jaya Yogyakarta University, Indonesia. Engage yourself in a dynamic learning environment and gain valuable skills that will set you apart. Beyond the classroom, Yogyakarta, a vibrant cultural hub and one of Indonesia's main tourist destinations, awaits. This summer school offers a unique opportunity to combine academic enrichment with cultural exploration.

Hosted on Atma Jogya campus in Yogyakarta, courses typically last between three and five days, which consists of interactive seminar in class with tutors. Field visits can also be provided for some courses. Our participating tutors are renowned experts from Atma Jaya Yogyakarta University alongside recognized specialists and academics from international institutions like University College London and University of Oxford.

All participants of our summer school will receive an e-certificate. A detailed certificate can be converted into credits by the participants’ home institutions. The courses are aimed at non-specialists: no prior knowledge is required, and classes are pitched at an introductory level. The courses are designed for an international audience aged 18 and over.


Programme

The Rise of Empires: The Political Economy of Innovation (SS1). This course will evaluate how innovation has facilitated the transition of one civilisation to another over the last 8000 years. Sustainable Development from an Economic Perspective (SS2). This course bridges the gap between traditional economics and the principles of sustainable development. While sustainable development acknowledges economic factors, it often critiques current economic practices as unsustainable and needs urgent action to put the current economics practices to an end instantly. This course challenges this notion and explores ways to integrate economic principles for a more sustainable future. (Tutor: Dr. E. Pantja Pramudya).

 

Macroeconomics: Keynes and the Monetarist (SS3). This course will emphasise the role of Keynesian economic policies on the world economy in the post-war period as well as after the Global Credit Crunch of 2008; and the Covid-19 pandemic and its aftermath. In this context, the Monetarist aspect of the course will evaluate the rise in global inflation in the latter half of 2021 and the implications for economic policy). The Economics of Creative Destruction (SS4). This course will dive into the fascinating world of creative destruction, a concept that explains how innovation disrupts existing businesses and creates entirely new ones. We'll explore how this constant change drives economic growth, but also brings challenges like job losses and inequality. (Tutor: Prof. Dr. Aloysius Gunadi Brata).

Fees

Fee for international participants: USD 75, and early bird is USD 60.

Fee for Indonesian participants: Rp 500.000 for students of any category, and Rp 750.000 for others. 

This includes welcome and farewell dinner, lunch (5 days), material/handouts, and e-certificate.

Please note that Atma Yogya does not provide accommodation for participants, but we can provide information about accommodations.

Teaching

Teaching methods: Participants will be taught in seminar groups. The teaching methods used during this course may include short lectures/presentations, physical handouts, seminars/group discussions.

Assessment methods: 1500 words essay to the tutors after the class and will be returned by the tutors after one week. Attendance and Course-certificate will be delivered on Friday. This certificate will also contain details of the material covered during the summer school.
